Do You Know About Parents as Teachers? Parents as Teachers is a wonderful organization that helps to support parents of children birth through age 5. They offer many valuable resources for families including home visits, group meetings, developmental screenings and more.
Our family is currently enrolled in Parents as Teachers, and it has been such a positive experience for us, that I wanted to take the opportunity to pass along some information about this program to others. I interviewed Barb Ehlen, the Parents as Teachers Coordinator for the Mehlville School District, to find out more about this outstanding program.

Q: What is Parents As Teachers?A: Parents as Teachers (P.A.T.) is a parent education and family support program.
Family participation in the program is voluntary and services are provided free of charge.
With funding from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and The Danforth Foundation, Parents as Teachers began in 1981 in Missouri as a pilot project for first-time parents of newborns. Convinced of the program's benefits and cost effectiveness, state funding was provided in 1985 to implement the PAT program in all Missouri school districts. Since 1985, Parents as Teachers has expanded to all 50 states and to other countries. Parents as Teachers National Center is located in St. Louis.
P.A.T. Goals:
• Increase parent knowledge of early childhood development and improve parenting practices
• Provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues
• Prevent child abuse and neglect
• Increase children's school readiness and school success
Q: Who can be enrolled in the program?A: Parents as Teachers serves families throughout pregnancy until children enter kindergarten. Any family in the state of Missouri can enroll through their local school district. Other states may have additional enrollment qualifications.
Q: How does the program work?A: Services to the family include:
• Personal Visits in the home from a certified Parent Educator who will share child development and parenting information. She will focus on your child.
• Parents as Teachers provides Developmental Screenings for children 6 months to kindergarten entrance to let parents know how their child is developing.
• Parents can attend Group Meetings like Baby Bunch, Things That Go and Jungle Jamboree giving them the opportunity to meet other families and participate in activities with their children. Informational speakers are also scheduled to provide education on parenting topics.
• Parents as Teachers can help families connect to other Community Resources that can help serve their family.
Q: How do parents and children benefit from the program?A: Parents help shape their child’s future through the kinds of experiences they provide. Being a parent is hard work and Parents as Teachers is ready to help parents educate their children and prepare them for school and the world. Your baby was born to learn and you are your child’s first and most important teacher!
Research shows that Parents as Teachers children:
• at age 3 are significantly more advanced in language, social development, problem solving and other cognitive abilities than comparison children.
• score higher on kindergarten readiness tests and on standardized measures of achievement in early grades.
Parents as Teachers parents:
• are more involved in their children’s schooling.
• are more confident in their parenting role and read more to their children.
Mehlville Parents as Teacher also offers M.O.M.S. Club. This is our parent organization offering support to members and to P.A.T. The Club offers monthly meetings with guest speakers, field trips, play groups, seasonal parties and more. They sponsor “Baby Mania”, a children’s tailgate sale, in the Fall and Spring and also sponsor the annual M.O.M.S. Club Trivia Night each March. This group provides moms with a networking opportunity and access to many family events.
