The Untamed Balloon {A Lesson on Self-Control}

by Laura Gurley on March 12, 2011

The above video is a complete lesson plan on the character trait of self-control. You’ll need 4 minutes to watch the video before class and one balloon for the the actual lesson.  Yup, it’s that simple.

{And, yes, in case you were wondering– I thought it was a bad hair day, too. Just another evidence that I am, indeed, a woman living in the Tropics.}

Your Turn to Comment.  Did you do this lesson this week?  How’d it go?

What are some things your students struggle with the most in practicing self-control?

    Great Website. I look forward to reading your encouraging words. I’ll pass it along and link to it on my site:) You have a nice touch in designing these pages. The colors and pictures are very appealing. I will never tire of seeing your face and remembering your sweet personality which comes through in these videos. Keep up the good work!

    ps. Ellen watched the balloon video and thought it was cute and made a lot of sense.:)

    love,

      Jennifer, Thanks, Friend!

      I appreciate the encouragement, as always. Glad Ellen thought it “made sense.” A good start, maybe!

    Laura,
    I’m all about activities where kids can understand something on a concrete level (the balloon) before applying it to something more abstract (their emotions). However, instead of leaving the balloon on the board for a week, I’m thinking my kids might need it on the board for the rest of the year!

    Great lesson. Did you come up with this idea?

      Thanks, Amy! Yes, I think that’s important–especially for younger children– taking something concrete in order to explain something abstract.

      And, yes– I just made this one up. :)

    Oh, well this just plain makes sense. A niche for you — out of a place where you are living, are gifted, and have so much to offer. Awesome!

    Love the graphic banner. Love the resources and practicality of the site.
    Love the grey/orange/black pallette.

    Go go go !!!!

      Thanks, Kelley! As always, I “heart” the encouragement.

    Wow, Laura, what a great idea and lesson to teach! I’m totally going to talk to my kids about this – and I’m neither a teacher nor do I school my kids at home. You have always been able to think of the most creative ways to teach children – even in the middle of a frantic child meltdown. I’ve loved watching you interact with your kids and mine, and we are all lucky that you’re sharing some of your wonderful ideas on this site! Thanks, friend!

      Hey Paige! Thanks for the encouraging words! Totally, think this could work with kids at the kitchen table, too! :) I reckon parents are most definitely teachers, too! :)
