What do your students do when they are done their work? Read? Finish up homework? Become a classroom management issue?
In order to address the issue keeping fast finishers engaged once they have completed their work, I created an Early Finisher Board. On the board, there are seven sections: Read It, Write It, Solve It, Draw It, Make It, Do It and Journal It. Each section has a task to complete, which is done in each student’s Early Finisher Notebook. Not only does this engage the fast finishers in the classroom, but it also allows students the important opportunity for choice, as they get to choose which tasks they would like to complete.
The best part is that once this board is set up (on a tri-fold board or bulletin board), the teacher can simply switch the tasks every two weeks so that students have something new and exciting to keep them engaged.
At this time, I have a Grades 1-4 version and a Grades 5-6 version of the Early Finisher Board available in my TeachersPayTeachers store. Each version comes complete with 40 weeks of activities, which should last most teachers throughout the year.
I would LOVE to give a copy away to a Teacher’s Lounge reader! All you have to do is leave a comment below (don’t forget to include your email address!) One winner will be chosen on Monday, September 17, 2012, and can choose either the Grades 1-4 or the Grades 5-6 version.
Good luck!
***September 18, 2012 – The contest winner has been chosen using the random number generator. The third person to comment, which was Maddy, has won one copy of the Early Finisher Board. Thank you to all who entered.***

Is it just me, or is the best moment on either The Biggest Loser or Extreme Makeover the Big Reveal? It’s that moment when the man or woman who has sweated and cried, been hungry and been determined, walks through the doors of that restaurant and re-enters life again among family and friends– the same, but beautifully different, [...]
Do you feel like you have slowly become a teacher that nags? A teacher that lectures more than a Harvard University professor? An educator that ends up harping more than cheerleading? I get it. In parenting and in teaching, it’s so easy to become the Character Cheetah without even realizing it — pouncing on the [...]
Whether we recognize it or not, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s influence reaches into every classroom in America today. This Baptist preacher from Alabama refused to step down in the face of injustice– despite being imprisoned 20 times, being stabbed in the chest, and being threatened and defamed during his years of public service. His [...]

On Tuesdays, we will be hosting a link-up party where bloggers and teachers can post links to their favorite teaching tips. We are going for [...]
